Fire Regs Pro is one app, but it does not treat every candidate as if they were sitting the same assessment. The current project contains seven selectable exam paths, and each path carries its own code, duration, open- or closed-book setting and topic weighting.
That distinction matters before you answer a single practice question. A learner preparing for a fundamentals assessment needs a different revision map from someone concentrating on design, installation, commissioning or maintenance theory.
Start with the assessment label
Open the exam paths page and match the full label and code to the information supplied by your training provider. Avoid choosing a route solely because one word sounds familiar. Several paths cover overlapping fire-alarm knowledge, but the configured emphasis is different.
The two BS 5839-1 fundamentals paths share the same underlying fundamentals pool in the current app. They remain separate choices because their exam labels and durations differ. The foundation route uses its own FFDA1 group, while design, installation, commissioning and maintenance each map to their own topic family.
Use the weighting as a revision map
The weighting attached to a topic is useful for planning, not just mock generation. A larger configured weight indicates that the app should draw more questions from that area when it builds a weighted mock.
A practical revision cycle is:
- Identify the topics included in your selected path.
- Take one short topic quiz from each area.
- Record the areas where you guessed, even if the guess was correct.
- Spend the next session on the highest-weight weak areas.
- Return to a mixed mock only after topic accuracy becomes consistent.
This avoids the common pattern of repeating broad mocks without learning why the same type of mistake keeps returning.
Open-book and closed-book practice are different skills
The fundamentals routes are configured as open book. That does not mean the examination is effortless. It changes the skill from pure recall to a blend of knowledge, document navigation and time control.
For an open-book route, practise deciding where you would verify a point before looking it up. For a closed-book route, concentrate more heavily on retrieval, distinctions between similar terms and applying principles to short scenarios.

Keep the source and the app in their proper roles
Fire Regs Pro provides practice and feedback. It is not an awarding body and does not replace the current standard, official course material or assessment instructions. When those sources differ from an app setting, the official source wins—and the discrepancy should be reported so the project can be corrected.
