How to Practise Open-Book Clause Navigation

Open-book assessment rewards navigation, not random page turning. The aim is to recognise the subject, predict where the answer belongs and confirm it efficiently in the permitted document.

Build landmarks before speed

Start by learning the broad shape of the document: where design, installation, commissioning, maintenance and annex material sit. You do not need to memorise every number. You do need enough landmarks to avoid searching the whole document for every prompt.

For each practice question, write down three things before opening the source:

• the subject in plain English;
• the likely clause family or annex;
• one distinctive search term.

Then locate the relevant passage and check the complete context. The answer may depend on a note, exception, table heading or definition nearby.

Separate “I know” from “I can find”

When a familiar figure appears, it is tempting to answer from memory. In an open-book drill, force yourself to verify it at least once. Standards editions change, familiar figures can apply only under defined conditions, and old course notes may use earlier structures.

Track two outcomes:

1. Was the final answer correct?
2. Did you reach the supporting area using a sensible route?

A correct guess with a poor search route is still a navigation weakness.

Add a time limit gradually

Do the first pass without a timer and focus on method. On the second pass, allow a generous limit. Reduce it only when the route becomes repeatable.

If a search stalls, stop and diagnose why. Was the search term too generic? Did you confuse a design requirement with a commissioning check? Did you jump to an annex without checking the main clause?

That diagnosis is more valuable than rushing through another ten questions.

Use explanations as pointers, not substitutes

The free practice quizzes show the explanation supplied by the current app question source. Treat a clause reference in an explanation as a pointer to your permitted document. Read the surrounding material and confirm that the explanation has not stripped away a condition.
