Detector radial coverage, common clearance figures, detection-zone limits and manual-call-point siting.

Point detector coverage

Point smoke detector
7.5 m maximum radial distance; about 10.6 m on a square grid.
Point heat detector
5.3 m maximum radial distance; about 7.5 m on a square grid.
Wall/obstruction clearance
Keep the sensing position at least 500 mm away where the clause applies.
Pitched ceiling allowance
Increase apex coverage by 1% per degree of slope, capped at 25%.

Beams, voids, honeycomb ceilings, high ceilings and air movement require separate assessment.

Detection zones

Single-zone floor area
Normally no more than 2,000 m².
Search distance
For non-addressable detection, keep the search route to 60 m or less.
More than one storey
Normally one storey per zone unless the building is small enough for the stated exception.

Manual call points

Mounting height
1.4 m to the centre of the operating face, with the permitted tolerance.
Travel distance
No more than 45 m along the route to the nearest call point.
Locations
Escape routes, storey exits, final exits and close to specific high fire hazards.
